Scottish-born Matthew has a brilliant mind that won’t stop ticking. At 81, the retired GM engineer is taking classes at North Georgia Technical college to answer the question of whether two fields of engineering can be merged. He recently moved to Greenville from New York where he was an avid runner and highly recognized in his local running club. “I love running,” Matthew said. “I started running to keep up with the kids when I was refereeing soccer and just loved it.” After the move, Matthew’s ankles swelled up whenever he tried to run and it was incredibly painful. The doctor gave him water pills which did nothing and also informed him that he had high blood pressure. When Matthew saw an advertisement for a drug study on high blood pressure at Greenville Pharmaceutical Research, he figured he would at least check it out. “They were all great,” Matthew said. “They gave me such good care!” As his blood pressure dropped, so did the swelling in Matthew’s ankles. “I thought it was the heat making them swell,” he said. “But it was my blood pressure all along!” Matthew has now joined the Greenville Track and Field Club and is well on his way back to earning first place. “In my age category of course,” Matthew said with a chuckle.
